PGPD’s Aviation Unit Flying to Florida

Members of the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Aviation Unit are getting ready to board Air 1 and head to Florida.  For the first time in department history, the unit will attend the Airborne Law Enforcement Association’s annual conference.  The conference is the premier event in the law enforcement airborne arena and will give national and international exposure to the PGPD’s aviation unit.  The PGPD will proudly display Air 1 on the showroom floor of the Orlando Convention Center.  The Prince George’s County Police Department is one of the only law enforcement agencies which flies the MD 520N model aircraft east of the Mississippi River.

Deputy Chief Hector Velez and Special Operation’s Division Assistant Commander Timothy Muldoon will represent the department at the three-day convention.  Chief pilot, Corporal Aaron Smith and mechanic Paul Tarrant are the crew members flying Air 1 the roughly 700 miles to Orlando.  “The Prince George's County Police Aviation Section has become an effective and efficient law enforcement program. Our goal has been to become a premier East Coast Unit exemplified by a stellar safety record, outstanding training and state of the art equipment. The unit will receive an award for the third year in a row at the convention,” said Corporal Smith.

The flight crew leaves for Florida on Sunday, July 14, 2013.  Their trip will take approximately eight hours. The ALEA convention runs from July 17-20, 2013.
